Teacher of the Year

Mack H. Graham
2007 - 2008 Teacher of the Year

I combined my experiences and concern for success of all my students and the concerns and experiences of my colleagues with the resources provided by my school as well as school system to provide my students means of being academically successful.  The three components I used to define success for my students were the number of students successfully completing my class, the students’ scores on required standardized tests, and the future desires of students to develop an appreciation of mathematics that leads them into striving to go a level higher in the future.
Each year, I judge my success as a teacher on the percentage of students whom I believe have displayed mastery of the course that I was given the responsibility of instructing.   Out of the 127 students that I was given this responsibility, over 95% of them were successful the first semester.    Due to the progress demonstrated by the students in the second semester, the percentage of success will rise higher.
A great percentage of my students are juniors so I use the GHSGT in mathematics to measure their success on standardized tests.  Ninety-seven percent of my students passed the mathematics part of the test and seventy-three percent made pass plus.
Most of my students have shown a strong desire to challenge their thirst for more knowledge in mathematics.  After speaking with my administrators, I have developed a special class in AP Calculus that will include students I have worked with this year and in the past.  The students and the parents have shown great interest in this class surpassing all past classes in the number of 5s that will be made on next years AP exam.
