Counseling Services

The Mission
Our mission is to focus on three areas of development: social / personal, career technology, and academic development, in an effort to help students experience academic success. We support students in the teaching and learning process so that they can become productive, thinking caring, and sharing members of society.

Beliefs
Guidance and counseling services are available to all students

Social / Personal Awareness

Requirements For Graduation
Students can choose to earn a college preparatory diploma, a career technology diploma or both diplomas through programs of study that earn a minimum of 22 units to qualify for graduation. Additionally, students who maintain a “B” or 80% average and earn 24 units may qualify for a distinctive diploma. These two additional units must be earned in language arts, math, science, social studies, fine art and/or foreign language.

English / Language Arts: 4 units, Math#: 4 units, Algebra 1: 1 unit, Geometry: 1 unit, Algebra 2: 1 unit, Social Studies: 3.5units, American History: 1 unit, World History: 1 unit, Citizenship / Economics: 1 unit, Geography: ˝ unit, Science: 4 units, Physical Science: 1 unit, Biological, Science: 1 unit, Foreign Language: 2 units, Health: ˝ unit, Physical Education^: 1 unit, Computer Tech / Fine Arts / Career Prep: 1 unit, Community Service*: ˝ unit, Electives: 1.5 units

Career Technology Program of Study

Curriculum Support

Academy Peer Tutorial

This program is designed to encouraged students to provide academic support to their peers in core and elective courses. It develops intellectual thought, knowledge of a variety of subjects, leadership and teaching skills, and community service. Students can earn community service hours as peer tutors.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
This program is designed to prepare students in the middle grade point range (2.0-3.5) for admission to four-year universities and colleges. It provides academic instruction and other support to students and prepares students for college eligibility including college level entry skills, coping skills, motivation, tutors, college visits, seminars; and community activities.

Media Services
The Media Center provides all students with the opportunities to retrieve, use and learn from information. The media center is continuing to develop a facility with diversified types of academic materials that promote high performance of all students in the school, and where educational experiences will foster lifelong learning. Some service available include Internet / GALILEO, computers, reference materials, project ideas, test preparation materials, college information, required reading books, Georgia Award books, the Benjamin E. Mays Collection, and Audio / Visual Materials.

Play It Smart
This is a tutorial program designed to provide support to student athletes by increasing the graduation rate, grade point average, ACT / SAT scores, community service hours, and participation in co-curricular activities. This program is sponsored by the generous contributions of the National Football League.

SAT PREP Classes
This program is designed to develop the critical thinking and problem solving skills needed to successfully score 1500 or better on the SAT. The classes include verbal and math tutorials.

Saturday School
Saturday School is a school-wide initiative adopted by the faculty as an opportunity for students to remedy a deficient grade in one or more failing courses. Teachers develop the criteria for participation in the program and collaborate with the student's original classroom instructor to assure that standards and course rigor are maintained.

SING (Success In Ninth Grade)
SING is an initiative to help students who are deficient in mathematics and language arts. Data from report cards and ITBS scores are used to determine eligibility. Students take reading enrichment, writer's workshop, and problem solving classes.

Youth Force
This program is designed to provide a comprehensive leadership and life skills training which will result in the creation of young leaders and role models who will work with their peers to instill positive values.
